Bible Verse

Ecclesiastes 2:17-26; Philippians 4:12-13 | ‘I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation’ (Phil. 4:12)

Message (The Art of Contentment)

Continuing to reflect on this passage from Ecclesiastes 2, you’ll notice that the contents of verse 24 are repeated five times during the book. Clearly the writer believes he has uncovered a secret that is worth sharing – that we should enjoy the small pleasures God has given us in life.

These include things like food and drink and the rewards of a job well done. Do you find satisfaction in your ‘toil’?

I have had many ups and downs during my 34 years as a primary school teacher. I have worked with both reasonable and unreasonable people, complaint and rebellious children – and in many different roles, ranging from leadership to supply teaching.

i have earned good money and less-good money! At different times, I have loved my job, tolerated my job, resented my job, missed my job – depending on what else was going on in my life, and whether or not OFSTED would be dropping in.

On many occasions, Paul’s words in Philippians 4 have been a considerable challenge to me. Oh, to learn the art of contentment in any and every situation! For me, my work was always going to be the most challenging place to practice this.

Of course, the clue to unlocking the power of this secret is in verse 13. I can do this not through willpower but through the one who gives me strength. Again, the power of contentment is not in striving but in receiving.

Think about your responsibilities in this season of your life. Are you trying to do much in your own strength? Perhaps God is challenging you today to relinquish control to Him, to strive less and receive more.

For Prayer and Reflection

Father, thank You for the things You have called me to do today. I release control of them to You. Help me to listen for Your voice for each situation I will face. Amen.
